Mr. Thanassis Pagonis is working for Almi Tankers as a Business Performance Monitoring Unit Officer for the past 8 years and has been involved with data management and analysis for the most part of his career. He holds a BSc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and a MSc in Digital Signal Processing & Communications, with research work on perceptual analysis and cognitive modelling. He strongly believes that business processes -ideally, well designed ones- should dictate the underlying technology and not the other way around. Since 2015, he has been designing and implementing end-user driven apps & services across the HSQE management spectrum, as part of Almi Tankers’ digital transformation strategy.

The power of APIs in a digitally transforming maritime industry
A few years ago, the need for enhanced data management knocked at Almi Tankers’ door. IT staff and infrastructure were top notch, however the approach in regards to software needs, had to be redesigned. Several strategic initiatives later, digital transformation became an integral part of the company.
We soon realized that apart from custom, in-house developed software, Almi had to invest on design and implementation methods, which would lead this strategic decision to the next level. As this investment and its return to the company grew exponentially, so did our design demands and implementation expertise.
Even though collaboration is a must in the shipping industry, many software vendors of our field, have low technical adoption of this reality. Making full use of APIs, both internally and externally, we have managed to establish a sustainable and interoperable software development model, the ROI of which far exceeds our initial expectations.
